Getting old can be "ruff," and it is especially true for our senior goldens. Rescue groups across the United States are feeling the crunch of foreclosures and families losing their homes and/or having to make cutbacks. Across the country senior goldens are landing in rescue in staggering numbers. Golden rescue groups depend upon foster homes to care for the dogs until they go to their forever homes. Sadly, for many groups adopting out the seniors can be a long process. Most foster homes welcome the beautiful white faced seniors with open arms, but then they don't have room for other goldens in need. On a small scale, golden retriever rescue organizations have been working together for years, moving dogs from one overwhelmed organization to another group that has potential adopters, but the current situation is overwhelming and we need to look for additional answers. Golden retriever rescues working with the Golden Retriever Club of America's National Rescue committee (GRCA-NRC) came up with an idea. Let's figure out a way to move our precious senior gold to rescue groups that have a wait list of adopters/fosters specifically looking for the very precious "old gold". Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue (HBGRR) in California happens to be such a group. HBGRR has a beautiful sanctuary and an active adoption program, including the "Golden Touch - Senior to Senior" program. The good news is that HBGRR is also a sanctuary where senior and hospice dogs can live out their lives in the senior community and can spend their days, sunning by the therapy pool or taking a nap in the grass under a shade tree, until their forever home is found. But to make this happen we need your help. The Golden Retriever Foundation (GRF), immediately answered our call and approved a grant to help get the program started. Currently LCGRR has three seniors that would benefit from a move to California. They are getting their travel papers in order, their travel agent is making the reservations, and at HBGRR, the volunteers are looking forward to welcoming the new golden guests. Look at these goldens faces and read their stories and then donate to SOS.
